Who we are:
We're group of maths PhD students in London aiming to give local students from state schools a taste of University-style mathematics, in a relaxed and friendly environment. We run short courses each half-term on various topics, with a focus on interactivity and exploration. Our courses are designed to be accessible to interested students from Year 1o up to Year 13 and are free of charge. If you've ever wondered what mathematicians do all day, or what a future in mathematics might look like, then consider applying: all you need to attend one of our courses is curiosity and an open mind!
LMO was set up to open the eyes of school students to the beauty and variety offered by maths at higher levels. We were especially concerned with presenting the world of maths to students who may not have had the opportunities to see much of it before, or who may never have considered it open to them. We strongly believe in Federico Ardila's axioms:
Axiom 1: Mathematical potential is distributed equally among different groups, irrespective of geographic, demographic, and economic boundaries.
Axiom 2: Everyone can have joyful, meaningful, and empowering mathematical experiences.
Axiom 3: Mathematics is a powerful, malleable tool that can be shaped and used differently by various communities to serve their needs.
Axiom 4: Every student deserves to be treated with dignity and respect.
As such, we particularly welcome and encourage applications from students with backgrounds which are traditionally underrepresented in mathematics-related, and more broadly STEM-related, professions.
